Royal Mail, the British postal service, has issued a new set of eight postage stamps and postcards featuring important Roman sites and artefacts. The set, celebrating Roman life in Britain, includes Hadrian’s Wall, Caerleon amphitheatre, a floor mosaic and the Roman lighthouse in Dover Castle.

The set, curated in partnership with the British Museum, reveals Rome’s profound impact and enduring influence on Britain’s society, laws, language, art, architecture, culture and beliefs. All of the sites and artefacts featured in the set can still be seen in Britain today.

The Antonine Wall stretches 63 km (39 miles) across Central Scotland, extending Roman territory 160 km (99 miles) north of Hadrian’s Wall.
The 8 cm high figure dates from the 3rd century AD and can be seen in the British Museum
A long-distance path follows the wall for 117 km (73 miles) from Newcastle in the east to Carlisle in the west. Many stretches of the wall and some forts are well preserved. Housesteads Fort has a museum and visitors’ centre.
Known as Aquae Sulis, the Roman Baths in the city of Bath hold a sacred spring, a Roman temple and a Roman bath house. The site is visited by over 1.3 million people every year but bathing is not allowed!
