Here at the Hunebed Centre we have found that international interest in the Dutch hunebeds is growing. However, the Dutch word ‘hunebed’ is itself not really known and understood in other languages. In Britain, for instance, these ancient tombs are known by various names including dolmens, passage graves, long or round barrows, cromlechs or quoits.
According to Wikipedia “Dolmens are known by a variety of names in other languages, such as dolmain in Irish; granja in Portuguese and Spanish; Dolmeni in Bulgarian; dysse in Danish and Norwegian; dös in Swedish; and so on.
Internationally, the most familiar name seems to be ‘dolmen’. And for that reason we have produced this short film in English to introduce these ancient monuments under the name of “The Dutch Dolmens”. We hope you enjoy it.
