The National Museum of Prehistory (Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte) in Halle, Germany has launched an exciting way of presenting information, creating in effect a digital eMuseum. Through an innovative digital educational programme, users can now view a series of presentations about the museum’s most famous exhibits and the stories behind them. It is believed that this approach is unique in the museum and exhibition world.

The presentations are ideal not only for users who are unable to visit the museum in person, but also for visitors wishing to prepare for their visit to the museum and to follow up afterwards. The information is available in seven different languages, including English.

    Sky Paths (Himmelswege) and Archaeostories

At the heart of the presentations is the Sky Paths tourist route which connects the most important archaeological sites in Saxony-Anhalt, centring on the Nebra Sky Disc. In the eMuseum, multimedia Archaeostories about each site tell of the astronomy of our ancestors and archaeological traces of knowledge that are thousands of years old. A special highlight are 3D applications developed especially for the eMuseum.

    Downloadable Discovery Maps

For each Sky Paths site there is a downloadable 9-page Discovery Map, comprising an introduction, a map, walking and cycle tours and information about points of interest along the way. The maps are available in English and cover the following sites:

    • Nebra Ark and Langeneichstädt Dolmen Goddess
    • Goseck Solar Observatory
    • Pömmelte Ring Sanctuary
    • State Museum of Prehistory in Halle

    Poster exhibition

There is also a 19-part poster exhibition which can be downloaded free of charge and used as the basis for lessons or presentations. It is available in seven different languages, including English. The file is available in both digital and print versions, depending on whether users want to view the poster exhibition on screen or in printed form. However, users should be aware that the English digital version is 85Mb and the print version a hefty 400Mb.

There is also a link to view 16 YouTube films about the Nebra Sky Disc, presented by the museum director in German with English subtitles. The Discovery Maps, poster exhibition and link can be found at https://www.emuseum-himmelswege.de/en/poster-exhibition
